While adjusting the joints in the spine and extremities is vital, it is the muscles and fascia that holds those joints in place. Without addressing both joint fixations and muscle work together you end up needing more adjustments. Likewise, a person who keeps going for massages for tight muscles without determining if joint fixations are causing those specific muscles to chronically be tight, is putting BandAids over a wound that isn’t healing.

At Positive Motion Chiropractic, we have been trained and utilize a wide variety of soft tissue techniques. From Graston Technique to Trigger Point Therapy, read on to find out about the cutting edge in soft tissue therapies we offer our patients. Some muscles need to be stretched and relaxed, and myofascial release and trigger point work are excellent for this. Other muscles are chronically weakened and need to be retrained to help posture and joint function. Targeted, individualized rehab exercises address these. Other tissues are chronically tight with myofascial adhesions and/or scar tissue. These can include areas of past trauma, areas with repetitive motion injuries, and/or postural stresses. Graston Technique, utilizing specialized tools and techniques, allows us to remodel the injured and painful tissues to get lasting relief from chronic tightness and pain.

Graston Technique

Graston Technique is an innovative, patented form of instrumented-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables doctors to effectively break down scar tissue and myofascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. It is a technique that was originally developed for athletes but now is an interdisciplinary treatment used by more than 9,000 clinicians worldwide - including chiropractors, physical and occupational therapists. Active Release Technique

Active Release Technique (ART) is a soft tissue treatment developed to release adhesions in the fascia and muscles. It uses the hands of the practitioner, specific patient movements, and exacting tissue pressure by the doctor, to release and help lengthen chronically tight and painful body tissues. Dr. Brant Pedersen (DC) has received formal training in Active Release Technique (ART) and utilizes the technique when appropriate to help patients recovery pain-free range of motion. ART is well tolerated by patients and allows rapid and lasting recovery from long-standing health complaints such as muscle pulls, neck pain, low back and disc issues, headaches, shoulder rotator cuff issues, tennis and golfer’s elbow, among others.

KinesioTaping Methods

KinesioTape or K-Tape has been around since 1973. It is just now starting to get international attention and use. It was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a chiropractor in Japan, while he was searching for a sports taping method to assist in the healing of traumatized tissues. He found that standard taping techniques, such as athletic taping, provided muscle and joint supports, however, they reduced the range of motion, did not support the fascia and in many cases inhibited the actual healing process of traumatized tissues. Kinesio Tape itself is a breathable, waterproof tape with a medical-grade, heat sensitive adhesive. It is easily tolerated and can last for 3-5 days without re-application, even in the water. You probably have seen examples of Kinesiology taping on Olympic and professional athletes of all sorts. Since we believe that the busy executive and stay-at-home mom deserve all the latest sports medicine techniques, at Positive Motion Chiropractic in Los Gatos we have trained in and utilize KinesioTape when it will help our patients heal faster and have less pain. The applications of K-Tape are varied, but can help with muscle strains, golfer’s elbow, shoulder pain, bruising, improving posture, and the list goes on... Functional Rehabilitation/Guided Exercise

Dr. Brant Pedersen (DC) is a member of the International Society of Clinical Rehabilitation Specialists (ISCRS) and has attended numerous rehabilitation exercise seminars. At Positive Motion Chiropractic in Los Gatos we know that for a patient to have full health they don’t only need to be out of pain, they need to regain full function. Often times getting the patient out of pain is the easy part. Helping the patient to regain full strength and flexibility so that they can be done with their pain for good, is something we like to offer all our patients. We have a state-of-the-art rehabilitation room at our facilities and we offer individual and small group rehabilitation classes to help you get healthy and feel better. Rehabilitative exercise under the supervision of a doctor, targeted towards your specific physical needs, is quite different from working out with a trainer at a gym. While we encourage all our patients to work out regularly, with a personal trainer if they choose, as your doctor of chiropractic we have an intimate understanding of your musculoskeletal strengths and weaknesses, and we will design a program and exercises that address those unique concerns.
