Functional Lab Analysis
“Test, Don’t Guess” is our motto. We routinely use standard and specialty labs to evaluate patient’s with digestive problems, food sensitivities, adrenal issues, menopause symptoms, etc. Our labs are state-of-the-art and will help you better understand your body.
There is a plethora of information out there on nutrition, supplements, and special diets. But out of all that information, what applies to your unique body and lifestyle. The only way to know is to “Test, Don’t Guess.” If you are taking supplements, staying away from specific foods, or taking medications for specific conditions, and you have not had a functional lab analysis performed, you are making decisions about your health without critical information.
Blood work performed routinely in today’s HMO medical climate is a cursory view of select body systems. Additionally, the “normal values” are based on the average of all patients getting that blood work performed by that lab. So the “normal values” from LabCorp, Quest Labs, or Kaiser, for most blood tests are all different. Additionally, I want to compare my lab values to the values for a body that feels fantastic and healthy. One that is full of energy, functions great, and has good longevity. Comparing my lab values to the average of all the “sick” patients showing up at a lab is a great way to get a false sense of health from incomplete information.
At Positive Motion Chiropractic we are licensed to order and interpret results from any lab or:
In today’s toxic world many people can develop immune sensitivities and allergies to common foods, environmental chemicals, additives and preservatives, heavy metals, molds, medications, and therapeutic herbs. At Positive Motion Chiropractic we have used a variety of tests in the past to help our patients with chronic, unresolved health complaints. These conditions have included IBS, thyroid conditions, ADD/ADHD, and autoimmune challenges. After working with numerous labs, we stumbled across a gem in sensitivity/allergy testing: ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies (www.elisaact.com). Their unique testing method is unparalleled in the industry and the results we have had with hundreds of patients has been remarkable. This blood test checks for three types of delayed hypersensitivity reactions through lymphocyte activation and tests up to 400 different substances in a single test.
SpectraCell Laboratories (www.spectracell.com) fills a vital testing niche with functional cardiovascular, nutritional, and telemore lab testing. And a bonus is that many of the SpectraCell tests are partially covered by health insurance. There are three different tests that SpectraCell labs offers. 1) MicroNutrient Testing: SpectraCell is the nation’s leader in nutritional testing and gives us a unique option to look at the vitamin, mineral, and anti-oxidant status of your cells. This tells us if you are taking the right supplements and in the proper dosages. “Test. Don’t Guess” is our philosophy regarding taking costly supplements. 2) Lipoprotein Particle Profile (LPP) Testing: The most advanced cardiovascular testing available in a blood test. The medical literature repeated states that “50% of people suffering from heart attacks have shown “normal” cholesterol numbers.” This means that the current medical standard of cholesterol testing is failing miserably. The LPP looks at additional risk factors such as Lp(a), Remant Lipoprotein, Small/dense LDL, HDL2B, homocysteine, and highly specific markers of inflammation. This allows a more thorough picture of your cardiovascular health and this knowledge can help you lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke. 3) Telomere Testing: Telomeres are sections of genetic material at the end of each chromosome whose primary function is to prevent chromosomal “fraying” when a cell replicates. As a cell ages, its telomeres become shorter. Eventually, the telomeres become too short to allow cell replication and the cell stops dividing. SpectraCell utilizes a blood test to determine age-adjusted telomere length which is the best method for assessing biological age. Are your cells (thus your body tissues) aging prematurely? This test will let you know and if you are aging too rapidly we can help you determine why and slow down the aging process. Between these three SpectraCell tests the patient is armed with specific and vital health and wellness knowledge.
Metametrix (www.metametrix.com) is a clinical laboratory with a large variety of functional testing options to help us solve our patients chronic health concerns. This lab does it all. Examples include: 1) Bone Resorption Testing to help identify accelerated bone breakdown which can lead to early osteoporosis and compression fractures. 2) Adrenal Stress Index is used in our clinic to assess the health of a patient’s stress glands, their adrenals. Problems with a patient’s adrenal glands can cause allergies, immune compromise, chronic pain, and fatigue, among other conditions. 3) Hormone testing using functional versus blood levels. Tests for both men and women that can help us identify why a female patient might be suffering from severe menopause symptoms or a male might be having symptoms associated with low testosterone. These tests are salivary hormone testing and the samples are collected by the patient at home. 4) Gastrointestinal Profile Testing are incredibly comprehensive tests of the stomach and digestive tract that assess for bacterial balance, parasites, enzyme production, yeast overgrowth, and markers of gut health, among others. 5) Celiac Profile measures IgA human tissue transglutaminase (IgA-tTG), serum IgA, and antigliadin antibody (IgA-AGA) for a high sensitivity test for celiac disease. Metametrix has another 20 or so test profiles for various conditions and disorders and is a cornerstone of our laboratory evaluation services.
Routine Laboratory Testing
For routine blood work, including the annual “full blood work panel” that we run on our wellness patients, we utilize LabCorp (www.labcorp.com). LabCorp performs more than one million tests per day, with more than 35 years of experience serving physicians and their patients. The results are timely, accurate, and reasonably priced. We have access to the full spectrum of LabCorp testing, but routinely use their blood and urine testing services. There are multiple LabCorp draw sites that we utilize in Los Gatos, but there are thousands of locations throughout the country.
